San Juan Chamula and Zinacantán

Itinerary

We will pick you up at your hotel at 07:30, with a transfer of approximately two hours to head to the mountains near San Cristóbal de las Casas and visit the Tzotzil town of San Juan Chamula, which is characterized by its unique customs and traditions. San Juan Chamula preserves both its culture and traditions that are closely linked to its Mayan worldview. We will visit the church as an important part of their ancestral practices, which in turn are part of their religious life. After this spectacular and important visit, we will transfer to the town of Zinacantán, known for its indigenous culture of Tzotzil speakers and its colorful textile crafts that are part of their traditional clothing and other household creations. We will visit their church, take a brief tour of their main square, and visit an indigenous home where we can admire their varied textiles. They will teach us how to use the backstrap loom, and they will also invite us into the kitchen where we can taste a handmade tortilla or prepare a bean and cheese taco with pumpkin seeds, and also have a drink of Posh, which is the local traditional beverage. After this unique experience, we will take you back to your hotel in San Cristóbal de las Casas, arriving approximately at 13:30. End of services.
